Gulags
A temporary system in the USSR, with a precedent in a much more cruel tsarist system existed before it, that was at its most operational during a time of intense sabotage and counter-revolutionary activity to guard against, as well as when productive forces were in the process of being greatly developed, with far better conditions than US prisons (families kept together, pay for workers/inmates). Treated by those less knowledgeable as some fundamental quality of Marxist-Leninist states, while far institutions far more deplorable and fundamental to capitalism (such as the plantation) are treated as "oopsies! that was bad but surely a mistake we've learned from!"
