Refuting anticommunist propaganda

US history is often interpreted in an extremely charitable light (fundamentally good, though flawed) while aspects of Communist states, in addition to being exaggerated, are treated as fundamental aspects of the system.
Ex: compare gulags to the US prison system

A fundamental theme: not only are aspects of communist states massively exaggerated, their equivalents in existing capitalist/imperialist states are far worse. And while in the former, less seemly aspects have a purpose in mind and can quickly be done away with/improved, in the latter, such aspects are far more fundamental.
